Responsible Tourism Even on Vacation: Bike & Train, the Perfect Combination!

If you love traveling responsibly and sustainably, the bike + train combination is the ideal solution for exploring new places without harming the environment. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the freedom of cycling without worrying about long distances!

Traveling by Bicycle: The Best Way to Explore and Respect the Planet

Traveling by bike is not only an eco-friendly choice but also a great way to boost both physical and mental health. When you pedal:

  • You fully immerse yourself in nature and the landscapes around you.
  • You slowly discover the beauty of the territory, appreciating every detail.
  • You have more opportunities to meet interesting people along the way.
  • You can indulge in local food and wine specialties guilt-free (because you’ll burn off the calories while cycling!).

Whether you’re planning a multi-day trip or just a day out, cycling allows you to experience an authentic and sustainable adventure.

The Train: The Most Eco-Friendly Way to Travel

If you want to reduce your environmental impact while traveling, the train is the best option. With only 0.044 kg of CO2 per km traveled, it is far more sustainable than cars or planes.
When you combine the train with a bicycle, the opportunities for sustainable exploration multiply!

Bike & Train: The Perfect Duo for Sustainable Mobility

The train + bike combination is not only great for daily commutes in the city but also an excellent choice for cycling tourism.
If you want to cover long distances or return to your starting point without retracing your entire cycling route, you can use train connections to make your journey easier and more enjoyable.
Traveling with Your Bike on Trains in Tuscany and Sicily
Tuscany is one of the best-connected regions in Italy, with excellent regional train services linking major cities and tourist destinations.

  • Modern trains have wide entrances and platform-level access (at most, there may be a small step), making it easy to load your bike.
  • Dedicated bicycle carriages are clearly marked with bike symbols in the trains, and can be at the top or at the end, often it is said from the voice speaking the location.
  • Regional and fast regional trains allow you to travel with a fully assembled bike without disassembling it.

How to Buy a Bike Ticket for the Train
To bring your bike on the train, you can purchase the Bike Supplement directly:

  • From automatic ticket machines
  • Through the Trenitalia app (“Purchase” section > “Regional Services and Promotions” > “Bike Supplement”)

How much does it cost?

  • If your bike is folded or disassembled, it travels for free as regular luggage.
  • If your bike is assembled, the supplement in Tuscany is from €3.50 to €2,50 depends on the time and day of the week, (less expensive during the week-end) and is valid until midnight on the day of use, regardless of the number of trains taken. In Sicily the supplement is for free.

Practical Tips for Transporting Your Bike in Stations and Trains

  • Check for elevators in stations to move between platforms (for example, in Pisa, there is an elevator that fits 1-2 bikes).
  • Look for metal channels on staircases: they help you slide your bike up or down without lifting it.
  • Be careful with bike hooks on trains: in some cases, if they lack rubber protection, they could damage your wheels. If possible, it’s better to keep your bike on the floor rather than hanging it.
